 Bio

Gerald Farin is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering as well as an affiliate professor in the mathematics departments at ASU. Farin received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Braunschweig in 1973, 1977 and 1979, respectively.

Farin came to the Fulton School in 1987 from the University of Utah where he served as an assistant professor. From 1980 to 1984, he served in Computer Aided Design (CAD/CAM) development for Mercedes Benz in Sindelfingen, Germany. He has been an affiliate professor in mathematics since 2001.

Farin has held visiting appointments at the University of Rostock, Germany;

the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany; the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany; and the University of Valenciennes, France. From 1993 to 1998, Farin served as secretary and in 2002, served as chair, to the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) special interest group on Geometric Design. In 1995 he was a special advisor for PRISM. In 1999, he received the CSE teaching award and in 2002 received the Schloss Dagstuhl award for achievements in CAGD.

Currently, Farin serves on two editorial boards. Since 1994, he has served as the editor-in-chief of Computer Aided Geometric Design. Since 1997, he has served on the Springer Verlag series on Mathematics and Visualization. Farin had previously served as an executive editor. From 1985 to 1996, he served as the associate editor of Computer Aided Design and from 1987 to 1996, he served as the managing editor of the SIAM , a book series on Geometric Design. He is also a current member of the strategic advisory board for the Delta Search Labs and a scientific advisor for 3D Compression Technologies in Tempe. Farin has authored four books and edited eight books on varying elements of Geometric Modeling.

Research interests:
Dr. Farin's research interests include curve and surface modeling, Bezier, B-spline and rational curves and surfaces, voronoi diagrams, industrial curve and surface applications and visualization.
