Site 1: ROCK WITH HELICAL SCORES NEAR THE SADDLE WHERE CARS DRIVE UP


10:03 A.M., 4/27/04
Carbonate rock on west side of ridge
10:31 A.M. - drilled two holes, one in each face of rock using small bit. Julie and I recorded two slopes and flute orientations (see Julie's notes).

115°59'25.2"

Elevation:
1231 ftHoles drilled approx 7 inches apart on separate opposing faces
Orientation of holes: 3°
Orientation of helical score on top of north-facing slope: 6-7°
South slope is approx 145°
N-facing ventifact slope: dip is 45° to the northwest; strike is N35E
S-facing ventifact slope: 65° dip; sloping to SW; Strike approx N38°W

Site 2: ROCK WITH DIFFERENTIAL HORIZONTAL WIND ETCHING

Carbonate rock up slope from Site 1. There is prominent differential erosion, giving a bookend-like appearance to the is and nearby rocks.

Trend of erosional grooves: N25°W
Dip of face: 56° to west
Strike: N2°W

Carbonate rock, on saddle, east of Site 2. The rock shows patterns that vary as function of original texture and slope.GPS:

Site 4: ROCK WITH FAIRLY LARGE AREA OF HOMOGENEOUS LIGHT GREY MARBLE ERODED IN PYRAMIDAL PATTERN


1:30 P.M., 4/27/04
Well-faceted, homogeneous carbonate rock, east of Site 3, on north slope. This rock is located just south of Rock #3.

 GPS:
N35°10'59.0"
W115°59'23.3"
(accuracy of 15 ft).Azimuth between drilled holes: 250°
Groove orientation(difficult to measure): 305/125 bidirectional
275°/95° azimuth from rock to large creosote bush in the dune. Distance of about 50 ft.

Site 6: LARGE ROCK ON NW SLOPE


2:45 P.M., 4/27/04
Large rock on northwest slope. Rock is on n-facing slope; high up (near crest); adjacent to saddle where cars park.

GPS:
N35°10'59.4"
W115°59'24.7"
Scott's GPS gives, 35°N, 10', 59.3"; 115°W, 59', 24.6", accuracy is 14 m

Azimuth between drilled holes: 15°
N-facing slope orientation of grooves: 350°
S-facing slope orientation of grooves: 182°
N face: dip of rock - 42°; strike - 120°
S face: dip of rock-22°; strike - 280°

Site 7: LINEAR ROCK WITH FINE GROOVES

Skinny rock south of Site 6. Located about 15 ft south of Rock #6. A linear rock with long grooves.

W115°59'24.7"Azimuth between holes: 10°
N-face: groove orientation - 335°
Dip 27°; strike about 90°

Site 8: VERTICAL FACE, N-FACING SLOPE, NEAR TO WHERE CARS PARKED IN SADDLE

Steep-sided carbonate rock on north slope. Small, deep flutes cover the ventifact surface.

(a) to (c) orientation: 275°

Upper surface; n-facing; to east of rock: about 28°; strike of 95°
Trend of fluting on n-face is 356°
